What does a school-based OT evaluation consist of?
An Occupational Therapist will complete an evaluation that will look at how the child’s skills impact their ability to fully participate in their classroom and/or school environment. An IEE for occupational therapy may assess a variety of areas such as motor skills (fine and gross motor), sensory processing, self-regulation, handwriting, classroom behavior, school related daily living skills, visual skills, and focus and attention as it relates to the school environment. Generally this evaluation will take place within the school setting (with permission) or a preferred location. The evaluation will begin with reviewing any previous reports, medical history, information on the IEP, and interviews with parents, teachers, and other staff working with the child. School observations will also be conducted to get a thorough idea of what the child’s school day looks like. A set of standardized assessments appropriate to the child will be conducted. Once the assessment portion is completed, a thorough, complete, and comprehensive report consisting of finding and any necessary recommendations (as it relates to the child’s education) will be provided to the parents and the child’s IEP team. This report will also be presented at the IEP meeting to discuss the findings and recommendations as well as to answer any questions the parent or the team may have.
Because we have experience working in the school district, we believe is essential to completing a thorough evaluation. We understand the inner workings of the special education systems as it relates to occupational therapy. Our ultimate goal is to provide parents and the child’s school with all the necessary information so that the child can be successful in school.
